This tutorial about working with audio files is not for geeks, but rather for funats of music or song´s authors and performers. I am a poet and, while recording my poems for posting audio files to my sites, I encountered some problems. For example, recording one poem of 12 lines resulted in an audio file 7 MB. I could not upload it to my web site. I perform research and found a free software which can convert audio files from one format to another and now I can make 700kb MP3 file from 7MB wav file. I am not affiliated with www.nch.com in any way. I use their FTP client software, which is free, and I like it. Recently, I downloaded Switch Audio File Conversion Software and I like it too.
Installation
Download Switch Audio File Conversion Software
Click the link Switch Audio File Converter for Windows.
The Opening switchsetup.exe window is displayed. Click Save as button. If you have Windows XP on your PC, then by default the file will be saved on your desktop. Actually, it does not matter where to save it. Important thing is that you know where it can be found.
Double click switchsetup.exe file on your desctop and installation process begins
Select I agree with these terms radio button and click the Next button. Read messages if any are displayed and follow their instructions. Installation is easy.
How to use Switch Audio File Converter
On Windows desktop click Start, All Program, and find Sound File Converter menu item.
The Switch Plus Window is displayed. Select MP3 for output format. Click Add files button
Find original sound file. In my case it is poem.wav 7 MB file.
Select your audio file and click Open button.
The original file is displayed in the Switch Plus window.
By default the new audio file is saved in the My Documents/My Music folder. You can click Browse button and change location. I did not change it in my example.
Click the Convert button to convert wav file to MP3 file.
The MP3 file is created in My Music folder. Click it by the right mouse button
and select properties
in the drop down menu. You will see the size of the file is about
10 times smaller than the original wav audio file
